Understanding PDF/A: The Standard for Legal Documents (EU & USA)

If you work in law, government, or healthcare, you have likely seen a requirement to submit files as PDF/A. This isn't just a random acronym; it is the ISO Standard (19005) for long-term preservation.

Why Not Just Normal PDF?

A normal PDF can reference external fonts or use encryption that might expire. A PDF/A is self-contained. It embeds all fonts, color profiles, and images within the file itself. It forbids encryption. This ensures that the document you save today will be readable in 50 years, regardless of how software changes.

Global Compliance

USA: PDF/A is widely used for federal court filings (PACER) and complies with NARA guidelines.
EU: The specific format supports eIDAS regulations for ensuring the integrity of electronic documents over time.
